Pickaxe in Build 42 — 1–2.2 Damage, Longest Reach, Door Damage 35
Build 42 pickaxe stats: 1–2.2 damage, weight 3, condition 13, knockback 0.3, reach to 1.6. The best door-breaker you can fight with, with the longest sourced swing.
FAQ
Is the pickaxe better than the fire axe?
Can the pickaxe replace the sledgehammer for breaking doors?
Why does the tier list call it A-tier with no knockback edge?
The Trade in One Line
The pickaxe buys you reach, a dependable floor, and the second-best door number in the game: 1–2.2 damage that never rolls under 1, a swing arc reaching 1.6 — the longest maximum of any weapon on our item pages — at weight 3 and condition 13. What it gives up is the two headline trades of its rivals — the sledgehammer’s 1.0 knockback and the machete’s 2–3 ceiling.
What the Numbers Mean in Play Cross-Verified
- Damage 1 – 2.2. The strongest guaranteed swing among common weapons: the baseball bat and fire axe both start lower than the pickaxe’s floor. The sledgehammer and machete out-ceiling it at 3, the katana absurdly so at 8.
- Reach 0.61 – 1.6. The longest maximum on any page in this series — past the katana’s 1.4 and the sledgehammer’s 1.35. Fighting at arm’s length with 0.3 knockback is exactly what this combination means: you hit first and nothing hits back from range.
- Weight 3. One unit above the carry-free class (bat, crowbar, machete, katana at 2), half the sledgehammer’s 6.
- Condition 13. Tied with the machete and fire axe, three above the sledgehammer. Maintenance gates the drain — skill leveling guide.
- Knockback 0.3. Machete-and-fire-axe territory. A third of what the sledgehammer throws; the reach is how you compensate.
- Crit 25%. Above the heavy group’s 20% floor, below the bat’s 40%.
- Door damage 35. PZwiki infobox, and the only sourced figure within reach of the sledgehammer’s 40 — the machete is 10, the crowbar 8. If you break doors and still expect to fight afterwards, this is the pick.
When Not to Use It
- Against a crowd you cannot space out. Reach only pays if you can keep distance; in a corridor pile-up, 0.3 knockback means they close, and the sledgehammer’s 1.0 is the answer this weapon does not have.
- When one kill must be certain. The 2.2 ceiling loses to 3 — and a panicked low swing eats the tier list’s flat −0.1 penalties off a floor of 1 before it eats the sledgehammer’s. See mood and panic.
- As a pure weapon. Its case includes double duty — the weapon tier list rates it A-tier as mining-and-weapon multi-use. If your slot budget is combat-only, the machete does more damage at a weight of 2.
How It Compares
| Weapon | Damage | Weight | Condition | Knockback | Reach Max |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Pickaxe | 1 – 2.2 | 3 | 13 | 0.3 | 1.6 |
| Fire Axe | 0.8 – 2 | 3 | 13 | 0.3 | 1.2 |
| Machete | 2 – 3 | 2 | 13 | 0.3 | 1.23 |
| Sledgehammer | 2 – 3 | 6 | 10 | 1.0 | 1.35 |
The decision the table forces: against the fire axe the pickaxe wins its own weight class outright; against the machete it is reach and doors versus damage and one third less weight; against the sledgehammer it is all-day carry and 35 doors versus 40 and a crowd-clearing swing. Most runs want the pickaxe in the slot between “tool” and “weapon” — that slot is exactly what it is.
Sources & Verification
Every figure on this page is agreed by two independent sources we can read today, matched by the in-game item ID Base.PickAxe:
| Source | Type | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| PZwiki — Pickaxe | Semi-official wiki (declared an official site of The Indie Stone, volunteer-maintained) | Infobox fields read via its MediaWiki API; door damage (35) is PZwiki infobox alone |
| pzfans — Weapon item tables | Community data, stamped “Verified for Build 42.20.4” | Independent rendering of the same fields |
What this is not. Neither source is our own measurement, and PZwiki stamps most item pages against an older 42.10-era build while flagging that they may lag the current release. Treat these as 42.20-era agreement rather than 42.21-verified, and expect a patch note to change them eventually. Spawn locations are deliberately absent from this page: we could not source them twice, so we do not print them.
