Build 42 Support Update — Tracking The Indie Stone Patches Through 2026

Build 42 support update: every patch through September 2026, balance hotfixes, and Build 43 NPC update roadmap teases.

Verified for 42.20.4 · 15 days ago Last updated: 7 min read

Current Status — September 2026

Build 42.20.4 is the current stable version, released September 3, 2026. The Indie Stone is in their “Support Update” phase for Build 42, meaning:

  • Regular balance hotfixes and bug patches
  • Server stability improvements (skyscraper chunk sync, animal simulation optimization)
  • Mod tooling updates (WorldZed, TileZed, AnimZed — released post-stable)
  • No new game-changing features until Build 43

Patch History — Build 42.20.x Series Official

Patch Date Focus
42.20 July 29, 2026 Stable release. All features described in Features Overview blog. First stable Build 42
42.20.1 August 6, 2026 Server crash fixes, Mod Workshop directory structure, Linux build improvements
42.20.2 August 19, 2026 Memory leak fix for long-running servers (was growing 1GB+/24h), Controller deadzone customization
42.20.3 August 27, 2026 Balance pass: Dizzy +3 cost → -3 (reduced penalties), Dexterous 4 → 2 cost (more accessible), animal stress threshold raised slightly
42.20.4 September 3, 2026 Critical MP desync fix (players on different skyscraper floors), zombie ragdoll improvements, mod API stability

What 42.20.3 Changed (Most Controversial Patch)

The August 27 balance pass made some popular traits more accessible and some “punishment” traits less harsh:

Trait Before After
Dexterous 4 cost 2 cost — now a viable combo even on cheaper occupations
Dizzy (negative) -3 points (painful) +3 points (gentler penalty, still negative)
Fit 4 cost 4 cost (unchanged)
Athletic 6 cost 6 cost (unchanged)

Community reaction was mixed — Dexterous became “free” for many players. The Indie Stone said they were monitoring balance and will adjust if it becomes the no-brainer default pick.

The “Support Update” Commitment Official

In their July 29 Build 42.20 release announcement, The Indie Stone stated explicitly:

“We’re not done. Build 42 stable is the beginning, not the end. Expect regular patches through Q4 2026 and into early 2027 focusing on:

  1. Server performance (especially skyscrapers)
  2. Balance tuning (player and community feedback)
  3. Mod tools (releasing post-stable)
  4. Polish pass (lighting adjustments, UI feedback improvements)”

This is a commitment, not a promise, but TIS has been delivering on their 4-6 week patch cycle so far.

Build 43 Roadmap — Early 2027 Target Official

The Indie Stone dropped a single sentence in a forum post August 14, 2026:

“Build 43 — the NPC update — is in early internal testing. We’re targeting late Q1 2027, but that’s a best guess, not a commitment.”

Known Build 43 plans from 2025 previews:

  • Friendly AI NPCs — companions, traders, quest givers
  • Faction system — group-based objectives, territory control
  • NPC behavior trees — characters with distinct personalities and survival priorities

Important: Build 43 will use a new save format again (saves won’t transfer from 42). Expect another wipe when it lands.

When to Update vs. Wait

Scenario Action
New character build, pre-B42.20.3 Update now — Dexterous at cost 2 is a massive quality-of-life upgrade
Stable server with 20 players Wait 3 days — patches sometimes introduce server-side bugs that surface under load
Single-player, haven’t played in a month Update immediately — you don’t have saves to protect
Critical mod-dependent server Wait 7 days — modders need time to verify compatibility
42.19 beta save Finish it first — 42.20 patches don’t affect beta branches

FAQ — Support & Patch Edge Cases

Q: Will Build 42.20.4 be the “final” 42.x patch?

According to TIS’s Q&A (Forum 97135): “We’ll keep patching Build 42 until Build 43 alpha begins. That’s likely 4-6 more patches from here.” So expect 42.20.5 through 42.20.10+ before the NPC update arrives.

Q: I’m still playing 42.19 Unstable. Is that branch safe?

Yes. The 42.19 beta branch is frozen — no new patches, no breaking changes. But you can’t transfer a 42.19 save to 42.20. The branch will be removed ~3 months after 42.20 stable (around late October 2026). The Migration Guide covers all three options for 42.19 saves.

Q: My mod broke after 42.20.3. Will the mod author fix it?

Most popular mods (50k+ subscribers) get fixed within 3-7 days of a balancing patch. Smaller mods might take longer. If it’s a 1-person mod and the author went silent, you might be out of luck. Check the mod’s Workshop comments for status updates. Players deciding whether to hold saves across the 42.20 line should also read the Should You Return guide.

Q: How do I downgrade to a previous Build 42 patch if a new one breaks things?

Steam doesn’t let you pick individual 42.20.x patches. You can:

  1. Use the 42.19 beta branch (but loses 42.20 content)
  2. Restore a save backup from before the patch (Saves folder has per-version backups)
  3. Wait for the next patch that fixes the breakage

Q: What happens to my save if I skip patches and jump from 42.20.0 directly to 42.20.4?

It works. Steam auto-applies all incremental updates. Your save won’t break — patches are backward-compatible within the 42.20 line. The only wipe is 42.19 → 42.20.
