Katana in Build 42 — Flat 8 Damage and the One Real Catch

Build 42 katana stats: 8–8 damage, weight 2, condition 10, knockback 0.5, 35% crit. The table's biggest number — with a condition-10 fuse on every swing.

FAQ

Is 8–8 damage real or a wiki error?
It is what both sources independently print, matched on the item ID Base.Katana: a minimum and maximum of 8, meaning no damage roll at all. We have not measured it in-game — treat it as two-source agreement, with the usual 42.20-era caveat.
Why is the katana not in the weapon tier list?
We cannot say — the tier list ranks class tables built from the same two sources but carries no katana row. The katana is a Long Blade by class like the machete, and the sourced numbers put its damage far above the machete's 2–3 ceiling.
Does the katana replace the machete?
On paper, almost entirely: 8 against 2–3 damage, reach 0.61 – 1.4 against 0.61 – 1.23, knockback 0.5 against 0.3, crit 35% against 20%. The machete keeps two things: one more condition (13 against 10) and a craft path — the tier list marks the machete as a Blacksmith craftable.

The Trade in One Line

The katana is the only weapon in the two-source table whose numbers do not need interpretation: 8–8 damage means every swing is the max swing, at weight 2, with the longest reach of any blade page we publish. The price is a fuse, not a stat — condition 10, the same as the sledgehammer, so everything above is bought with a limited number of swings.

What the Numbers Mean in Play Cross-Verified

  • Damage 8 – 8. The largest value in the entire sourced weapon table, and a flat one: no low roll to curse at. The machete and sledgehammer top out at 3; the baseball bat never leaves the 1s. Against any zombie a common weapon can fight, one swing ends it.
  • Weight 2. The same carry cost as the machete, bat and crowbar — none of the sledgehammer’s 6-and-park-it tax.
  • Condition 10. The catch. Tied with the sledgehammer as the shortest fuse we list: the machete has 13, the bat and crowbar 15. Maintenance skill governs drain speed — see the skill leveling guide.
  • Knockback 0.5. Same stagger as the bat and crowbar, half the sledgehammer’s 1.0. The katana kills individually at record speed; it does not flatten lines.
  • Reach 0.61 – 1.4. The longest blade we list: past the machete’s 1.23 and the kitchen knife’s 0.9, and past the sledgehammer’s 1.35. Only the pickaxe outreaches it overall at 1.6.
  • Crit 35%. Second only to the bat’s 40% among the weapons we list — and on a flat 8 base, the multiplier on top of it is the one figure neither source publishes.
  • Door damage 8. PZwiki infobox. Respectable — equal to the crowbar — but a katana is not why you break doors; the sledgehammer does 40.

When Not to Use It

  • When it is your last good weapon. Condition 10 on an unsupplied fuse is a real risk calculation. If the nearest resupply is hours away, the machete’s 13 and the bat’s 15 let you fight all day; the katana is for the fight you can see coming.
  • In a pen or corridor pile-up. 0.5 knockback does not make crowds disappear. The sledgehammer’s 1.0 turns three zombies into a turn-based fight; the katana just kills them one fast swing at a time while they close.
  • As a reason to skip Long Blade levels. It is a Long Blade-class weapon like the machete, and the weapon tier list synergy table credits Long Blade levels with more damage and faster swings — the skill loop still does the work.

How It Compares

Weapon Damage Weight Condition Knockback Crit
Katana 8 – 8 2 10 0.5 35%
Machete 2 – 3 2 13 0.3 20%
Sledgehammer 2 – 3 6 10 1.0 20%
Baseball Bat 0.8 – 1.1 2 15 0.5 40%

The honest read: every sourced number says the katana is the strongest weapon in the table, and the reason players still argue for the machete or bat is the two numbers you cannot see in a fight — condition and supply. An 8-damage swing you refuse to take because the blade is at 2 condition is a worse weapon than a 2-damage one you trust.

Sources & Verification

Every figure on this page is agreed by two independent sources we can read today, matched by the in-game item ID Base.Katana:

Source Type Notes
PZwiki — Katana Semi-official wiki (declared an official site of The Indie Stone, volunteer-maintained) Infobox fields read via its MediaWiki API; door damage (8) is PZwiki infobox alone
pzfans — Weapon item tables Community data, stamped “Verified for Build 42.20.4” Independent rendering of the same fields, including the flat 8–8 damage

What this is not. Neither source is our own measurement, and PZwiki stamps most item pages against an older 42.10-era build while flagging that they may lag the current release. A number this far above the rest of the table is exactly the kind a patch note moves — see version history. Treat these as 42.20-era agreement rather than 42.21-verified. Spawn locations are deliberately absent from this page: we could not source them twice, so we do not print them.
