The Six New Build 42 Firearms Official

The 42.14 ammunition rework consolidated item types specifically in preparation for new guns. Build 42 shipped six of them, balanced to complement the existing armory and consistent with the types of guns popular in 1993 Kentucky. All specs below are the official TIS descriptions.

Gun Type Ammo Official description (short)
JS-14 Rifle Semi-auto rifle 5.56×45mm, 20-round magazine Scaled-down M1A action. Extremely popular among civilians, also used by some police and corrections agencies. Robust and lightweight, not well known for accuracy
JS-3T Tactical Shotgun Shotgun 12 Gauge The “Riot Gun” — police model of the JS-2000 with higher capacity and increased weight. Heavy firepower for patrol officers; military uses it for breaching and close combat
L92 Carbine Lever-action carbine .357 Magnum First designed 1892; modernized in the 1950s to fire the smokeless .357 Magnum instead of the original obsolete cartridge
L94 Rifle Hunting rifle .30-30 The classic “deer rifle” — one of the most famous hunting and ranch rifles of all time. Handy, accurate, lethal
MSR7T Tactical Rifle Bolt-action rifle 7.62×51mm Built on the short-action 788 receiver, specialized for police and military use with an accurized barrel and heavy stock. Somewhat bulky; the choice for long-range precise shots
Trapper Carbine Compact carbine .45 ACP Developed in the 1980s for camping and wilderness use. Shares ammo and magazines with the 1911 pistol. Compact for mid-range use; reputation of being somewhat unreliable

Real-World Counterparts (Community Cross-Reference)

A TIS forum thread (March 2026) mapped the new names to real firearms — useful for context, but this is community research, not an official statement:

In-game Real-world comparison
JS-14 Rifle Ruger Mini-14
L92 Carbine Winchester Model 1892
L94 Rifle Winchester Model 1894
MSR7T Tactical Rifle M24 / Remington 788 family
Trapper Carbine M1 Carbine look; 1911-magazine compatibility fits a Marlin-style carbine
JS-3T Tactical Shotgun Benelli M3 (some players argue for a JS-2000/M870 variant)

The New Aiming System Official

Build 42 replaced generic hitboxes with anatomy-based shooting: right-click/aim mode lets you target head, torso, or limbs depending on the weapon and your skill.

Key factors in a successful shot:

  • Aiming skill — trained through deliberate practice; it rises faster with live targets at moderate distance than point-blank spam.
  • Weapon type — rifles reward a steady two-hand position; pistols degrade quickly under movement.
  • Aiming sway — the reticle moves; it worsens in the dark and in bad weather, which the new lighting overhaul makes far more common indoors.
  • Panic and stress penalties — multiple nearby zombies, injuries, exhaustion, and horror events spike panic. Shots miss, jams get worse, and reloads feel endless.

Practical rule: if your panic is spiking, holster the weapon and fall back to melee until your breathing stabilizes. Silence beats a bad shot — see the Weapon Tier List for which melee tools cover you while you recover.

Ammo Matching and Inventory Hygiene

The 42.14 ammo rework made caliber and magazine matching strict:

  1. Right-click a weapon to inspect its compatible ammo before looting.
  2. Store bulk ammo in labeled crates at base — don’t mix calibers in one run bag.
  3. Carry one partial box plus one spare magazine on raids; overweight ammo slows your escape.
  4. Loot only calibers you can fire today.

The Trapper Carbine is the cross-compatibility example: it fires .45 ACP and shares magazines with the 1911, so a single ammo type can feed two weapons — the only place in the roster where that officially holds.

Jamming and Noise Discipline

  • Firearm jamming is enabled in the canon modes (a 42.15 change). Guns can fail mid-fight — carry a plan B, and never treat a rifle as your only exit.
  • Gunfire converts quiet blocks into migration events. A shot heard across a neighborhood pulls zombies from every direction; in Louisville, the skyscrapers amplify that for days.
  • Fences are more vulnerable to concentrated attacks (also 42.15) — so don’t lean on a fence line to “hold them off” while you reload.

When in doubt, survival basics still apply: distance and doors beat firepower.

Where to Find the New Guns

TIS confirmed the loot tables were reworked to reflect civilian, police, and military distribution of firearm types:

Gun Likely distribution (per official role)
JS-14 Civilian homes, police, corrections facilities
JS-3T Police stations, military sites (breaching use)
L92 / L94 Rural homes, hunting cabins, ranches
MSR7T Police and military only
Trapper Carbine Rural / wilderness contexts

Exact spawn rates per location shift with patches — verify in-game after 42.20.x hotfixes.

FAQ

Q: Are the new guns better than Build 41 staples?

TIS says they are “balanced to fit in with the existing set of guns” — complementary, not power-creep. The JS-14 is explicitly “not well known for its accuracy,” and the Trapper is “somewhat unreliable.”

Q: Do new guns change the melee meta?

Not directly. Aiming now has real accuracy consequences (sway, panic, body parts), which raises the cost of shooting and keeps melee as the safe first option — the Weapon Tier List rankings still hold for days 1–7.

Q: Why does the L92 use .357 Magnum instead of the original cartridge?

The 1892 original fired obsolete rimmed cartridges; TIS modernized it to the smokeless .357 Magnum for a usable, recognizable ammo type in 1993.

Q: Will more guns arrive after 42.20?

No official commitment yet. 42.20 is the first stable wave; treat the roster as “current as of 42.20.”
