Sledgehammer in Build 42 — Damage, Weight, Condition and Verdict

Build 42 sledgehammer stats: 2–3 damage, weight 6, condition 10, knockback 1.0. What that trade means in practice, and when a crowbar or pickaxe serves you better.

FAQ

Is the sledgehammer the strongest melee weapon in Build 42?
Among weapons you can just pick up in a normal house, yes — 2–3 damage ties the machete for the top of the common pool and beats the baseball bat and crowbar. The katana outscores it on paper, but it is a rare find.
Why does my sledgehammer break so fast?
Its maximum condition is only 10, the lowest of the heavy weapons — the machete has 13 and the baseball bat 15. The Maintenance skill governs how often condition drops, so low-Maintenance characters burn through it fastest.
Is the weight worth it?
Weight 6 is heavy for a weapon you carry everywhere. It slows inventory management and stamina use, which is why many players keep it in a vehicle or a base rather than in hand.

The Trade in One Line

The sledgehammer buys you stopping power and crowd control at the cost of carrying capacity and durability. 2–3 damage with a full 1.0 knockback means one swing can drop a zombie and put the next one on the floor — nothing else you find in an ordinary garage does that. Weight 6 and condition 10 are the bill.

What the Numbers Mean in Play Cross-Verified

  • Damage 2 – 3. The top of the commonly-found pool. A single clean swing kills most zombies outright, which is the whole argument for carrying it.
  • Knockback 1.0. The highest of any blunt weapon we list — the baseball bat manages 0.5, the crowbar 0.5. This is why the sledgehammer survives in the weapon tier list despite being slow: it converts being surrounded into a turn-based fight.
  • Condition 10. Low. The machete gets 13 and the baseball bat 15, so the sledgehammer is the heavy hitter that dies first. Condition loss is gated by the Maintenance skill — see the skill leveling guide.
  • Weight 6. Heavy enough that most players park it in a vehicle or at the base rather than carry it on foot all day.
  • Reach 0.7 – 1.35. Short for its class. You have to be committed to land it.
  • Door damage 40. By a wide margin the highest we can source — the machete is 10, the crowbar 8. If the plan involves entering a locked building, this is the tool, not a weapon.

When Not to Use It

  • Tight interiors. Short reach plus a slow swing means you eat hits in corridors where a crowbar or a baseball bat simply recovers faster.
  • Long treks. Weight 6 taxes your inventory on a run where you will not fight anything. Take the crowbar; it is a tool and a weapon.
  • When you cannot afford the durability. Condition 10 is real. If you are hours from a hardware supply, the bat’s 15 outlasts it.

How It Compares

Weapon Damage Weight Condition Knockback
Sledgehammer 2 – 3 6 10 1.0
Machete 2 – 3 2 13 0.3
Baseball Bat 0.8 – 1.1 2 15 0.5
Crowbar 0.6 – 1.15 2 15 0.5

Read that table as the actual decision: the machete matches the sledgehammer on damage while weighing a third as much and lasting longer, and it has more reach. The sledgehammer keeps its place on knockback — 1.0 against 0.3 — and on breaking things. If you are fighting a line of zombies in the open, knockback is the difference. If you are fighting one at a time, the machete is the better weapon.

Sources & Verification

Every figure on this page is agreed by two independent sources we can read today, matched by the in-game item ID Base.Sledgehammer:

Source Type Notes
PZwiki — Sledgehammer Semi-official wiki (declared an official site of The Indie Stone, volunteer-maintained) Infobox fields read via its MediaWiki API
pzfans — Weapon item tables Community data, stamped “Verified for Build 42.20.4” Independent rendering of the same fields

What this is not. Neither source is our own measurement, and PZwiki stamps most item pages against an older 42.10-era build while flagging that they may lag the current release. Treat these as 42.20-era agreement rather than 42.21-verified, and expect a patch note to change them eventually. Spawn locations are deliberately absent from this page: we could not source them twice, so we do not print them.
