TL;DR — Build Order Priority Cross-Verified

Day 1: Barricade all windows → Lock 1 exit → Grab water + food
Day 2: Collect stones/clay → Place primitive forge → Find hammer + pliers
Day 3: Build rain collector → Clear 20-tile radius → Set workstations inside
Day 7: Upgrade to professional forge → Add defense layers → Start farming

Day 1 — The Emergency Shelter Deep-Tested

Your first base isn’t a “fortress” — it’s a survival cell. Requirements:

Step-by-Step Setup

  1. Pick any house with 1-2 doors (avoid 3+ exits — you can’t defend them all)
  2. Barricade every window — 4 planks + 8 nails each. Use curtains first (zombies can’t see through curtains) then add planks
  3. Barricade only ONE door — leave at least one exit. Best practice: barricade the back door, use the front door as your tactical exit
  4. Block the other door with heavy furniture (wardrobe, fridge, bookshelf) — zombies can’t push through, but you can move it
  5. Grab every tool in the house — Crowbar, Hammer, Screwdriver, Pliers, Nails, Planks. Stack them in a corner
  6. Fill every container with water — Sinks, bathtubs, bottles, pots. Day 4 = water shutdown

Common Day 1 Mistakes

Mistake What Happens Fix
Barricading both doors You’re trapped. If zombies break a window, you can’t escape Always leave 1 tactical exit
Using your last nails/planks on fancy barricades You run out mid-fortification Prioritize windows first. Then furniture doors
Sleeping on the ground floor with basement access Zombies spawn in basements and wander up Either clear the basement OR board up the trapdoor
Forgetting to close doors behind you Zombies follow you inside Close every door. Every time.

Day 2-3 — Workstation Setup Deep-Tested

Primitive Forge — The First Big Build

Materials needed: 36 stones + hammer + charcoal
Skill required: Blacksmithing Lv.1 (any occupation can build it if they have the materials)

Placement rules (critical!):

  • Place INSIDE your base or within 20 meters of your door
  • Forging makes noise that attracts zombies
  • You can never move the forge after placing
  • Avoid placing on dirt — needs a stone/concrete floor

All Early Workstations & Their Costs

Workstation Materials Skill Purpose Tier
Primitive Forge 36 stones + charcoal Blacksmithing Lv.1 Iron Ingot/Bar, basic blades Primitive
Rain Collector 4 planks + 4 stones + hammer Carpentry Lv.3 Infinite water (after day 4 shutdown) Primitive
Composter 3 planks + 20 rot fruit + 20 veggies Farming Lv.1 Fertilizer for gardens Primitive
Potter’s Wheel 10 stones + 5 planks + hammer Pottery Lv.2 Crucibles, clay pots Primitive
Carpenter’s Workbench 6 planks + hammer Carpentry Lv.2 Reinforced barricades, furniture Professional
Anvil 4 Steel Block + 12 Charcoal Blacksmithing Lv.6 Unlocks professional forge tier Professional

Steel Block Catch-22 Solution

You need 4 Steel Block to make an Anvil. But Steel Block needs a Professional Forge + Anvil…

Answer: Scavenge a pre-existing Anvil first. Check:

  • Hardware stores (30% spawn rate)
  • Scrap piles (20% spawn rate)
  • Lakeside Island Blacksmith shop (guaranteed pre-built)

Day 4 Crisis — Infrastructure Shutdown Prep Official

Day 4 is when water + electricity shut off permanently. Here’s your 48-hour pre-shutdown checklist:

Before Day 4 Hits

  • Rain collector placed (4 planks + 4 stones, Carpentry Lv.3)
  • 20+ water bottles/jugs filled from tap
  • Bathtub full — that’s 200 liters, enough for 10+ days
  • Stove/campfire ready for boiling water (incoming water will be “tainted”)
  • Food audit — check all fridges. Cook or dry any food that spoils in 2-3 days
  • Generator — if you found one, now’s the time to set it up. Needs gas + Electrical Lv.2

Water After Day 4

Source How Safe How to Collect
Rain collector 100% safe Auto-collects water. Right-click → Drink or Decant
Rivers/lakes Needs boiling 1 water source + campfire = boil 3 minutes
Ponds Needs boiling + risk More stagnant, higher chance of illness
Looted water bottles Check condition Any water bottle with >80% condition is safe to drink

Helicopter Event Defense Deep-Tested

Helicopters spawn randomly between day 1-10. They draw 200+ zombies directly to your location.

Defense Strategy Tier List

Strategy Safety Effort Notes
Run away immediately ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ None Best option. Pack essentials, run 200+ tiles, wait 10 minutes
Lock down + hide ⭐⭐⭐ Low Board up all windows, close all doors, wait it out. Zombies pound doors for 5-10 minutes
Fight from inside ⭐⭐ Medium You’ll run out of stamina + food. Don’t do it unless you have a Sledgehammer + 50 planks
Lure to another base ⭐⭐⭐⭐ High Lead zombies to an empty house, sneak back to your base. Risky but stylish

If You Must Fight

  1. Stay in a 1-room space — zombies can only attack from 1-2 angles
  2. Use knockback weapons (Baseball Bat, Crowbar) — crowd control > damage
  3. Door = shield — close door, let 1 zombie in, kill, close door, repeat
  4. Watch fatigue — 10 swings = −25% speed. Rotate weapons or retreat

Long-Term Fortress Design (Day 7+) Deep-Tested

Defense Layer System

[Outer Wall — Fence + Barbed Wire]
  ↓
[Kill Zone — Open field between wall and base. Zombies bottleneck here]
  ↓
[Base Exterior — Metal sheet barricades on all windows]
  ↓
[Inner Core — Your bedroom + storage + workstations. Only 1 door access]
Location Defense Strategy Notes
Lakeside Island (Rosewood SE) Natural bottleneck — only 1-2 land approaches. 2-layer barricade on bridge Best base in the game. Less zombie spawns
Hardware Store (West Point) Metal sheet on all windows. Furniture blockade on back door. Barricade front door last 2-story = escape to roof
Gas Station (Muldraugh W) Corner location = 2 barricade sides, 2 wall sides. Store food in auto shop Scrap metal everywhere for reforging
Louisville Skyscraper Cleared 1 floor = defense. Lock stairwell with furniture. Roof = escape rope Only for late-game when you’re Axe Lv.5+

What NOT to Build

Bad Build Why It Fails
Base in Louisville downtown Helicopter events = 200+ zombies converge from 360°
Forge in a separate building Forging noise = zombie magnet. Run gauntlet every time
All workstations scattered Zombies break into one area = you lose access to critical tools
Multiple bases spread out You can’t defend two places. Consolidate
Windows with planks AND metal sheets Overkill. Curtains + planks is enough. Metal sheets on important doors only

Common Base Building Mistakes Deep-Tested

Mistake Frequency What Happens Fix
Forgetting to close doors behind you 30% of deaths Zombies follow you inside. No warning. Habit: close every door. Every time.
Building forge before clearing your base area 20% Zombie spawning near forge while you’re carrying stones Clear your 20-tile radius first, then build
Placing workstations in the wrong order 15% Rain collector needs Carpentry Lv.3. If you don’t level Carpentry first, you’re stuck Prioritize Carpentry Lv.1-3 on day 1-2 (craft crude barricades for XP)
Barricading exit doors 15% Trapped. Zombie breaks a window = no escape Always keep at least 1 unbarricaded door as your tactical exit
Ignoring basement access 10% Zombies spawn in basement, wander up while you sleep Clear basement OR board up trapdoor. Periodically check
Not hoarding planks + nails 10% Helicopter event = need 50+ planks in 10 minutes. If you don’t have them, you die Keep 100 planks + 200 nails in storage minimum

FAQ — Base Building Edge Cases

Q: Can I deconstruct and rebuild workstations?

No. Once placed, workstations are permanent. They can’t be moved or deconstructed. This is why placement matters so much. Choose your spot carefully.

Q: What’s the best barricade material?

  • Curtains first — zombies can’t see through them, they let light through
  • Planks second — cheap, easy to craft, good protection
  • Metal sheets last — only for critical doors/windows. Precious resource.

Q: Do metal barricades block light completely?

Yes. Metal sheets block all light. Curtains + planks let partial light through. Best combo: metal on critical doors, curtains + planks on windows. You can see zombie silhouettes approaching but they can’t see inside.

Q: Can I stack workstations on top of each other?

No. Each workstation needs its own tile. You can place them adjacent to each other but not on the same tile.

Q: Is building inside a house better than building outside?

Indoors = you don’t need a roof or wall. Outdoors = more space but you need to build everything from scratch. For first 7 days, use existing buildings. Don’t waste resources building your own walls until week 2+.
