FAQ

Is the crowbar or the baseball bat the better weapon?
The numbers are nearly identical — same weight (2), same condition (15), same knockback (0.5), same reach (0.61 – 1.25). The bat crits at 40% against the crowbar's 20%; the crowbar edges the damage ceiling (1.15 against 1.1) and doubles the door damage (8 against 5). Fight-first players take the bat, utility-first players take the crowbar.
Why does the tier list call the crowbar the best day-one weapon?
Condition 15 means it will not break on you, 0.6–1.15 damage is enough if you manage fatigue, and the tier list notes it doubles as a barricade tool. Its stated weakness is raw power — a sledgehammer or machete hits harder per swing.
Which skill levels the crowbar?
The crowbar is a Blunt-type weapon but counts as Short Blunt for XP, per the weapon tier list's skill-synergy table — the same loop the baseball bat uses. The XP mechanics themselves are in the skill leveling guide.

The Trade in One Line

The crowbar sells longevity and second use. Damage 0.6–1.15 is nothing to write home about, but condition 15 is the joint-best of the blunt group, weight 2 carries free, and at door damage 8 (PZwiki infobox) it is the best door-tool you can also fight with. The weapon tier list ranks it the top day-one weapon for exactly that combination.

What the Numbers Mean in Play Cross-Verified

  • Damage 0.6 – 1.15. The high ceiling is real but rare — expect the middle. Two clean swings should end most zombies; the sledgehammer and machete end them in one at 2–3.
  • Condition 15. The joint-highest durability of the blunt weapons we list, tied with the baseball bat and well clear of the sledgehammer’s 10. Maintenance governs how fast it drains — see the skill leveling guide.
  • Knockback 0.5. Same stagger as the bat, half the sledgehammer’s 1.0. Enough to buy a turn in a corridor, not enough to clear a line.
  • Weight 2. The crowbar never argues with your inventory. That is the difference between carrying it and parking a weight-6 sledgehammer in a vehicle.
  • Reach 0.61 – 1.25. Identical to the bat — close-quarters honest.
  • Crit 20%. The blunt group’s floor, shared with the sledgehammer. The bat’s 40% is what you give up when you choose utility over crits.
  • Door damage 8. PZwiki infobox, and the highest of the common blunt set — the bat does 5. Still nowhere near the pickaxe’s 35 or the sledgehammer’s 40.

When Not to Use It

  • When you want kills in one swing. 0.6–1.15 simply is not 2–3. If the machete is in your pack, the crowbar waits in reserve.
  • When you already hold the bat and no door worries you. Same weight, same condition, same knockback — the bat’s 40% crit then wins the duel. The crowbar earns its slot on the 8 door damage.
  • Against a locked building with intent. 8 is a prying bar, not an opener. The sledgehammer page makes the door case at 40; bring that, or the pickaxe at 35.

How It Compares

Weapon Damage Weight Condition Knockback Door
Crowbar 0.6 – 1.15 2 15 0.5 8
Baseball Bat 0.8 – 1.1 2 15 0.5 5
Machete 2 – 3 2 13 0.3 10
Sledgehammer 2 – 3 6 10 1.0 40

Door figures are PZwiki infobox values. The story the table tells: the crowbar and the bat are one weapon with two personalities — crits versus doors — and both of them trade raw stopping power to the machete, which hits like a sledgehammer at the same weight 2 and only loses on the 0.3 knockback.

Sources & Verification

Every figure on this page is agreed by two independent sources we can read today, matched by the in-game item ID Base.Crowbar:

Source Type Notes
PZwiki — Crowbar Semi-official wiki (declared an official site of The Indie Stone, volunteer-maintained) Infobox fields read via its MediaWiki API; door damage (8) is PZwiki infobox alone
pzfans — Weapon item tables Community data, stamped “Verified for Build 42.20.4” Independent rendering of the same fields

What this is not. Neither source is our own measurement, and PZwiki stamps most item pages against an older 42.10-era build while flagging that they may lag the current release. Treat these as 42.20-era agreement rather than 42.21-verified, and expect a patch note to change them eventually. Spawn locations are deliberately absent from this page: we could not source them twice, so we do not print them.
