Build 41 → 42 Migration Guide — Saves, Branches, and What You Need to Know

Build 41 saves don't transfer. Three options: fresh on 42.20, legacy41 beta, or 42.19 beta. Step-by-step Steam instructions.

The Bad News First

Build 41 saves are not compatible with Build 42. There is no official conversion tool, and there won’t be one. The Indie Stone explicitly states the data formats are fundamentally different.

This affects:

  • Solo players with existing Build 41 worlds
  • Server owners running Build 41 servers
  • Players with ongoing 42.19 Unstable saves (42.20 added map content that breaks 42.19 saves)

Your Three Options Official

Option Who It’s For How To Do It
1. Start fresh on 42.20 Stable Everyone — this is the recommended path Default after update. Just launch the game.
2. Stay on Build 41 (legacy41 beta) Players with long-running Build 41 saves they don’t want to abandon Steam → Properties → Game Versions → legacy41
3. Finish a 42.19 Unstable save Players who were testing 42.19 and don’t want to lose progress Steam → Properties → Game Versions → 42.19

After July 29, 2026, Build 42.20 Stable is the default version. Just launch the game normally — no extra steps needed. Your Build 41 saves will still be on your machine, accessible via the legacy41 branch if you want to revisit them.

Once you’re on 42.20, the old difficulty presets are gone — pick one of the four new game modes: see the Game Modes guide.

If you’re a server owner, create a new server instance for Build 42. Migration is not possible — full setup in the Dedicated Server Guide.

Option 2: Stay on Build 41 — legacy41 Beta Branch

If you have a Build 41 save you want to keep playing:

Steam Instructions

  1. Right-click Project Zomboid in your Steam library
  2. Select Properties
  3. Open the Game Versions & Betas tab (labeled “Betas” on older Steam versions)
  4. From the dropdown, select legacy41
  5. Wait for the download to complete
  6. Launch the game — your Build 41 saves will be available

Server Owners

  • Use the dedicated server depo for Build 41 (still available in SteamDB)
  • Tell your players to switch to legacy41 in their beta settings
  • Important: the legacy41 branch receives security patches but no new features

GOG Users

GOG Galaxy doesn’t have a direct beta selector like Steam. Check GOG’s Project Zomboid game card for version options or use the offline installer for Build 41.

Option 3: Finish a 42.19 Unstable Save

If you’ve been testing Build 42.19 Unstable and don’t want to lose progress:

  1. Right-click Project Zomboid in your Steam library
  2. Select Properties → Game Versions & Betas
  3. Select 42.19 from the dropdown
  4. Launch and continue your 42.19 save

Why isn’t 42.19 compatible with 42.20? The Indie Stone added significant map content between 42.19 and 42.20 that breaks existing world files. Players who tested on 42.19 need this branch to finish their runs. Not sure whether a fresh start is the right call for you? The Should You Return to Project Zomboid guide walks through the decision.

Save Location (Backup Before Anything!)

Before switching branches, back up your save files. On most systems:

# Windows
%USERPROFILE%\Zomboid\Saves\

# macOS
~/Library/Application Support/Project Zomboid/Saves/

# Linux
~/.zomboid/Saves/

Copy the entire Saves folder to a safe location before switching beta branches. Different branches won’t corrupt each other, but it’s always good practice.

Modders: What Happened to Your Mods?

Build 42 has significant under-the-hood changes that will break most Build 41 mods. The Indie Stone has been working with modders since the 42.13 multiplayer stress test, but expect a transition period:

  • Some popular mods will update within days of 42.20 stable
  • Modders need the new mapping tools (WorldZed, TileZed) and AnimZed (animation editor) — these are now being released post-stable
  • Check the #mod_portal channel on the official PZ Discord for updates

Decision Tree — Which Path Should You Take? Deep-Tested

Do you have an ongoing Build 41 save you care about?
├── Yes → Are you attached to specific character levels / base?
│ ├── Yes → Stay on legacy41. Download it, finish the run, then start fresh.
│ └── No → Start fresh on 42.20. You won't regret it — 42 is a better game.
└── No → Did you test 42.19 Unstable?
├── Yes → Use 42.19 beta branch to finish that save (before it expires).
└── No → Start fresh on 42.20. Default experience, zero complications.

Common Migration Mistakes Deep-Tested

Mistake Frequency What Happens Fix
Switching beta branches without backing up 15% Different branches create different save folders, but some players report old saves getting corrupted or disappearing entirely Copy the entire %USERPROFILE%\Zomboid\Saves\ folder to a safe location before any branch switch
Deleting Build 41 saves thinking they’re incompatible 10% Build 41 saves work fine on legacy41. Don’t delete them — you can still visit your old bases Use the legacy41 branch to access old saves. You can have both branches installed side-by-side
Trying to copy a 42.19 save into 42.20 25% World files break because 42.20 added map content (new towns) that corrupts old 42.19 chunks Use the 42.19 beta branch to finish that save, then start fresh on 42.20
Not updating mods when switching to 42.20 20% Most Build 41 mods crash immediately on 42.20. Workshop items auto-unsubscribe when they break Audit your mod list. Keep only mods that say “Build 42 compatible” in their description
Forgetting your server’s world is lost Server owners No migration path. Period. Accept it, spin up a new server with new config, new world. It’s 30 minutes of work.

FAQ — Migration Edge Cases

Q: Can I run legacy41 and 42.20 simultaneously?

Yes. Steam lets you switch between branches on the same install. They use separate save folders (Saves/legacy41/ vs Saves/42.20/). No conflicts.

Q: Will my legacy41 branch get updates?

No. legacy41 is a frozen snapshot. No new patches, no bug fixes. It’s there for players who want to finish old runs, not for ongoing play.

Q: I have a 42.19 Unstable save from testing. Should I finish it or start fresh?

Finish it. The 42.19 beta branch will be available for at least 3 months (TIS statement). You put hours into testing — get your value out of it. But don’t get attached — when the branch is removed, that save is gone.

Q: Does cloud sync (Steam Cloud, GOG Galaxy) work across branches?

Steam Cloud syncs per-branch. Your 42.20 save goes to the cloud as 42.20, your legacy41 save as legacy41. They don’t cross-contaminate.

Q: I bought the game on GOG. Does any of this change?

No. GOG Galaxy also has beta branch support (right-click → Manage Installation → Configure → Beta channels). Same branches, same rules, different UI.
