Trait Cost vs Benefit — Visual Comparison

How to read these bars: green = points earned from negative traits, red = points spent on positives. A balanced build fills as much green as needed to fund the red bars without going over budget.

The Classic 10-Point Starter Budget

Every occupation starts with 0–8 free trait points. The standard opening move: pick 2–3 high-gain negatives, then spend on S-tier positives.

Negative Trait Points Earned (green = budget available):

Slow Healer 60%
High Thirst 60%
Underweight 40%
Smoker 40%

Budget total: +10–16 points from negatives.

Positive Trait Points Spent (red = cost incurred):

Now spend that green budget on the highest-impact positives. The rule: always max out S-tier traits first, then fill remaining points with A-tier.

Dexterous 20%
Fast Learner 70%
Strong 100%
Handy 80%

Note: Dexterous at 2 points is 10× the value of Strong at 10 — 50% faster reload/craft for a tiny investment. Always take it first.

Positive Traits — Cost Analysis (Is It Worth The Points?)

S-Tier — Always Take If You Can Afford

Trait Cost Effect Math Check
Dexterous 2 50% faster reload, craft, barricade Best value in the game. 2 points for a 50% speed boost to 6+ systems
Strong 10 +10 carry weight, +25% melee damage, +1 Strength 25% melee damage = 1 extra zombie per fatigue cycle. Pays for itself by day 3
Fast Learner 7 50% XP on ALL skills 25% × 1.5 = 37.5% vs 100% × 1.5 = 150% — widens the skill 0 vs 1 gap. Per-skill XP routes: Skill Leveling guide

A-Tier — Take When You Have Extra Points

Trait Cost Effect Best For
Handy 8 25% faster Carpentry, 25% faster all repairs Carpenter / Electrician / Mechanic
Brave 8 Panic never increases Firearm users, anyone who hates panic jitter
Athletic 6 +1 Fitness (fatigue −15% per level) Close-quarters fighters, high-zombie-density areas
Organized 2 +2 inventory capacity Only 2 points. Everyone. Just take it.
Cat Eyes 4 50% less likely to trip in darkness Night players, build-42 dark houses
Night Owl 6 No fatigue penalty from being awake past dark hours Reverse sleep schedule players
Iron Gut 6 75% less chance of illness from food/water Lowers food poisoning risk significantly

B-Tier — Niche or Situational

Dextrous 8 +1 Nimble, +1 Lightfoot Stealth players, solo runs
Fit 4 +1 Fitness (same as Athletic) Cheaper version of Athletic
Brawler 6 10% unarmed damage, 10% blunt weapon damage Unarmed meme builds, very early game

Tinkerer 4 +1 Maintenance (new B42 trait) Repair-focused playstyle
Target Shooter 5 +1 Aiming (new B42 trait) Firearm-focused playstyle

C-Tier — Skip Unless Roleplaying

Trait Cost Effect Why It’s Low
Cook 8 +1 Cooking, food spoils 20% slower Cooking isn’t hard enough to justify 8 points
Herbalist 6 Know which foraged herbs reduce illness Foraging is unreliable. Just boil water
First Aid 4 Bandages work 2x faster Nice but injury frequency is low
Mechanic 6 Repair vehicles 20% faster Mechanic occupation already gives +4 Mechanics
Electrician 6 Repair electronics 20% faster Electrician occupation already gives +5 Electrical

D-Tier — Literally Never Take

Trait Cost Effect Why It’s Trash
Ambidextrous 6 Can use 2 melee weapons simultaneously B42 dual-wield is broken — misses half your swings
Low Thirst 6 50% less water consumption Water is abundant. 6 points for convenience
High Metabolism 6 Eat 25% more food Food is abundant too. Negative trait for 6 points

Negative Traits — Maximize Your Free Points

S-Tier Negatives — Take These Every Time (Highest Points, Least Pain)

Trait Points Gained Effect Why It’s Fine
Underweight +4 −15% carry weight Weight recovers by week 2 from normal eating. 4 free points early game
Slow Healer +6 Heal 50% slower 6 POINTS. You rarely get hurt that badly. Most scratches heal in 1-2 days regardless
High Thirst +6 Drink 25% more water 6 POINTS. Water is everywhere — rivers, rain collectors, fridges. Trivial to manage
Smoker +4 Stress +1 per day without smoking Cigarettes spawn in every house. Free 4 points if you remember to grab a pack
Unlucky +8 Lower rare loot, more zombie spawns near you 8 POINTS. You still find common weapons. Lucky/Low Luck don’t matter for survival

A-Tier Negatives — Take If You Know The Playstyle

Trait Points Gained Effect Risk
Deaf +4 Cannot hear zombie sounds Don’t take unless you’re Park Ranger (who compensates). Helicopter events = surprise
Hard of Hearing +2 Reduced hearing range Safer than Deaf. 2 easy points
Restless Sleeper +3 Need 2 extra hours of sleep per day 3 free points. You can sleep 10 hours every night anyway
Poor Eyesight +2 Reduced vision at night 2 easy points. Torch fixes this
Slow Recovery +4 Injuries take longer to heal Fine if you don’t get injured. Bad if you do

B-Tier Negatives — Situationally Acceptable

Trait Points Gained Effect Risk
Hemophobic +4 Panic +5 when seeing blood Will panic during every zombie fight. Bad for combat-focused builds
Agoraphobic +4 Panic +3 in open areas Terrible for wilderness runs. Fine if you stick to buildings
Claustrophobic +4 Panic +3 indoors Terrible for indoor looting. Fine if you live outside
Nightmares +2 Stress overnight Fine if you have a stress-reducing item (cigarettes, radio)

C-Tier Negatives — Avoid Unless You Know What You’re Doing

Trait Points Gained Effect Why It’s Risky
Obese +6 −50% fitness gain, fatigue +25% Fitness matters more in B42. 6 points but cripples your melee ability
Overweight +4 −30% fitness gain, fatigue +10% Better than Obese but still bad for combat
Slowpoke +4 −25% movement speed Can’t outrun hordes. Never take
Prone to Illness +6 50% higher chance of food poisoning Takes Iron Gut to cancel. 6 points but bad odds

D-Tier Negatives — Pure Challenge Run Only

Trait Points Gained Effect
Bald +2 No hat slot
One Legged +8 Movement speed halved
Blind +16 Can’t see anything
Lucky N/A Negative version of Lucky

Optimal Build Point Math — Fire Officer Example

Fire Officer = 8 free trait points, 0 occupation cost.

Positive Cost Negative Gain Net
Dexterous 2 Slow Healer +6 −2 + 6 = +4
Fast Learner 7 Underweight +4 −7 + 4 = −3
Organized 2 High Thirst +6 −2 + 6 = +4
Strong 10 — — −10
Totals 21 spent +16 gained +8 points remaining after all trait costs

Result: Fire Officer + Dexterous + Fast Learner + Organized + Strong + (5 more points for Handy or extra) + Slow Healer + Underweight + High Thirst. That’s 3 S-tier + 1 A-tier positive trait for free. Fire Officer is also our S-tier pick in the Best Occupations guide.

Build 42-Specific Trait Interactions You Need to Know

Interaction What Happens Source
Fast Learner × Skill 1 Occupation 25% × 1.5 = 37.5% vs 100% × 1.5 = 150%. Skill 0 vs 1 gap widens with Fast Learner game-rack.com deep-dive
Dexterous × Barricade Speed Dexterous gives 50% faster barricading. Handy gives 25% faster. They multiply (1.5 × 1.25 = 1.875x) bamboogaming test
Resilient × Iron Gut Iron Gut reduces food poisoning. Resilient reduces zombie infection. They stack multiplicatively (0.75 × 0.75 = 56.25% less chance) TIS Forum 93921
Deaf × Park Ranger Park Ranger has woodland movement bonus that compensates somewhat for Deaf’s lack of situational awareness. Best pairing for Deaf Community consensus
Unlucky × Loot Spawns Unlucky reduces rare loot but does not reduce common loot spawns (crowbars, axes, baseball bats) bamboogaming testing
Smoker × Stress Smoking a cigarette removes all Stress moodles but adds one Hunger. Net neutral if you eat regularly In-game test

FAQ — Trait Building Questions

Q: Should I take Strong or Fast Learner first?

Fast Learner first for melee-focused builds. Here’s why: Fast Learner makes you level Axe 50% faster. Axe skill 5 gives +50% melee damage. So Fast Learner → Axe 5 → +50% damage. Strong gives +25% flat. But Fast Learner also makes every other skill level faster. It’s a compound investment.

Q: Is Dexterous at cost 2 really that big of a deal?

Yes. It was cost 4 before 42.20.3. At cost 2, it’s literally the best value in the game. It affects reload, craft, barricade, disarm, and hotwire speed. Every single character should take this. If you can’t afford it, you’ve spent your points wrong. The Best Occupations guide shows how the points budget works out per class.

Q: How many points should I target for negatives?

6-12. Underweight (+4) + Slow Healer (+6) = +10. That alone pays for Dexterous + Fast Learner. Stacking too many negatives makes the character miserable to play. Stop at +10-12 max.

Q: Is Unlucky actually +8 points? That seems too good.

Yes, +8 points. The downside is “lower chance of finding rare loot” but common weapons always spawn. You won’t be missing Fire Axe or Crowbar. The only things you miss are Machete spawns and military gear. For a 6-hour run, you’ll never notice.

Q: Can I take multiple positive traits that stack (e.g., Strong + Athletic + Fit)?

Athletic and Fit both give +1 Fitness but they don’t stack — only the highest value applies. Strong is the only one that stacks with other damage sources. Read trait descriptions carefully.
