Overview — Blacksmithing Is Not a Side Skill Official

Build 42 Blacksmithing is a complete production economy, not the “melting scrap and making tools” of Build 41. The indie stone designed it as a multi-skill dependency chain: you need Carpentry for wooden molds, Masonry for furnace construction, Pottery for crucibles, and Charcoal from Foraging/Tree Felling for fuel.

This isn’t a grind — it’s building an industrial base from scratch. And the payoff is massive: forging your own sturdier weapons, repairing gear that would otherwise break, and creating metal armor that turns the game from survival into domination.

What You Need to Start (Level 0 → Level 2) Cross-Verified

Your goal in early Blacksmithing is to smelt scrap metal into usable chunks and bars, then forge basic tools to level the skill. You need:

Tools (Can’t skip these)

Tool Where to Find Notes
Hammer (Ball-peen hammer) Tool boxes, garages, hardware stores Every forge action requires a hammer in-hand
Tongs / Pliers Garages, tool shops Holding hot metal — cannot skip
Pickaxe Garages, hardware stores Stone for furnaces, clay from riverbeds
Stone Chisel Knap it yourself (Knapping 1) Needed for early stone constructions — see the Knapping guide

Workstation Progression

Tier Name Build Requirements What It Enables
Primitive Stone Furnace + Stone Forge 36 stones + some clay Smelt iron, forge basic items
Professional Forge + Anvil Forge: 12 bricks + 8 iron ingots. Anvil: 4 steel blocks Advanced recipes, steel weapons/armor
Industrial Electric Forge Pre-existing on map (auto shops, workshops) Fastest production, no charcoal needed

Critical rule: Once you place a workstation, you can’t pick it back up. In Build 42, hammers won’t break furnaces or anvils. Choose your base location carefully.

Charcoal — Your Fuel Supply Deep-Tested

Every forge action needs charcoal, which comes from burning logs in a controlled setting:

  1. Build a Burning Pile from 6 logs (crafting menu)
  2. Light it with a lit match or torch
  3. Wait for it to burn down (takes several in-game hours)
  4. Harvest charcoal from the ash

Pro tip: One Burning Pile yields roughly 3-5 charcoal. Make several at once to avoid running out mid-craft.

The Blade Reforging XP Loop Deep-Tested

This is the most important discovery in Build 42 Blacksmithing, and The Indie Stone confirmed it’s intended behavior (not a bug):

All blade-forging recipes accept their own output as input. Forge a Large Knife Blade once, then reforge it again — same blade, 3 charcoal, new blade output — infinite XP.

Blade Recipe Charcoal Cost Required Skill
Forge Small Knife Blade 3 Lv.1
Forge Kitchen Knife Blade 3 Lv.2
Forge Large Knife Blade 3 Lv.4
Forge Hunting Knife Blade 3 Lv.5
Forge Cleaver Blade 4 Lv.6
Forge Crude Sword Blade 5 Lv.7
Forge Sword Blade 6 Lv.8
Forge Machete Blade 6 Lv.9

How it works:

  1. Forge a Small Knife Blade from 1 Iron Bar + 3 Charcoal → +XP
  2. Re-enter the forge menu, place the blade back in the input slot → +XP again
  3. Repeat. Each iteration: 3 charcoal consumed, 1 blade produced, XP gained
  4. Blade quality degrades slightly each reforge, but you’re using it for XP anyway

The grind: From Lv.1 to Lv.10 using the Small Knife Blade loop takes roughly 250-300 reforges — or about 750-900 charcoal. Much faster than any other XP path, and it’s what the devs intended.

Skill Level Unlocks Cross-Verified

Level What You Gain Key Recipes Unlocked
1 Small knives, smelting iron chunks Forge Small Knife Blade, Smelt Iron Chunk
2 Kitchen equipment, iron bars Forge Kitchen Knife Blade, Make Iron Bar
3 Non-weapon tools Spoon, Fork, Can Opener
4 Weapon heads begin Large Knife Blade, Smelt Steel Chunk
5 Better weapons Hunting Knife Blade
6 Butchery tools Cleaver Blade
7 Crude swords Crude Sword Blade, Simple Axe Head
8 Garden tools Garden Fork Head (requires Steel Block — confirmed by TIS staff Ash)
9 Full weapon array Sword Blade, Machete Blade, Axe Head
10 Everything Metal Armor, reinforced components, Coat of Plates

Note: Garden Fork Heads are Lv.8 Blacksmithing + Steel Block + Anvil. TIS staff Ash confirmed on forums that iron molds are loot-only — you can’t craft them.

Mid-Game Production Loop (Level 3→6)

Once you have a Primitive Forge running, optimize your resource cycle:

Scrap Metal (cars/furniture/kitchenware)
    → Smelt Iron Chunks
    → Smelt Iron Bars
    → Forge components (heads, tools)
→ Break down worn items for scrap metal
    → Repeat

Metal recycling is closed-loop. You forge items for XP, break them down when worn, smelt the scrap back down — minimal new input needed.

Late Game — Full Industrial (Level 7→10) Cross-Verified

When you reach professional forge + anvil:

Output Materials Value
Reinforced Axe Steel Axe Head + Wooden Handle Damage +20% over looted axe
Machete Machete Blade + Handle Best early-game melee weapon
Coat of Plates Body Armor Multiple steel plates + rivets Highest-tier armor in the game
Metal Helmet Steel sheet + rivets Slash/crush protection
Furnace upgrades Masonry + iron blocks Improves production speed

An Industrial Electric Forge (found pre-existing in auto shops and industrial zones) eliminates charcoal entirely — runs on gas or electricity if you can wire it up.

Where to Find Tools in Knox County

Location What You’ll Find
Garages Hammers, pliers, wrenches, socket sets, scrap metal piles
Hardware stores Complete blacksmithing starter kits, stone, bricks, crucibles
Auto shops Electric forge, welding torches, heavy-duty tools
Riverbeds Clay deposits (use pickaxe) — needed for crucibles and molds
Caves Stone and iron ore for mid-game production
Lakeside Island / Rosewood South Popular blacksmithing base locations — trees + rock + relative safety

Most Common Forge Recipes — Quick Reference Cross-Verified

All recipes require: hammer (in hand or nearby) + tongs/pliers + charcoal. Must be at a Forge workstation (Primitive or Professional).

Sword Blade 6 Highest Lv.8+
Machete Blade 6 Highest Lv.9+

Optimal path: Forge Small Knife Blades at Lv.1 → fast loop → cheap. Swap to Large Knife Blade at Lv.4.

Common Mistakes That Waste Your Time Deep-Tested

Mistake When It Happens Why It Kills Progress Fix
Placing workstations before finding clay/stone Day 2 excited to build forge Can’t build anything. Workstations cannot be moved after placement Clear a 5×5 area with easy access to: riverbed (clay), trees (charcoal), rocks (forge materials)
Using Iron Ingot for blade reforging Early forge experiments Only Iron Bar works in blade-forge recipes First cast ingots → bars, then forge blades
Forgetting to dismantle scrap metal first Trying to smelt full cars Most large items need to be broken down into scrap first Right-click → Dismantle → then smelt scrap metal
Wasting Steel Bar on non-reforgeable items New to Blacksmithing Axe Head can’t be reforged back into itself Stick to blade reforging loop for XP — forge only the blades you need for actual use
Building with Iron instead of Steel Lv.3 Steel Bar unlocks Iron items break 2x faster. Steel is not that much harder to make Prioritize Steel over Iron after Lv.3. Steel Bar from Iron takes 1 flux + heat
Running 4GB VPS for a B42 server Server hosting Build 42 base RAM = 8GB, even 0 players Minimum 8GB, recommended 12-16GB
Wasting time dismantling for XP Old B41 habit Dismantling XP nerfed to near-zero in B42 Blade reforging loop is the only efficient XP path

FAQ — Blacksmithing Deep Questions

Q: Can I move my forge/anvil after placing?

No. Once placed, hammers won’t break them. This is intentional — The Indie Stone designed workstations as permanent base anchors. Choose your base location carefully.

Q: Are iron molds loot-only or craftable?

Loot-only (confirmed by TIS_Ash on forums 95811). You can’t make them. Search garages, hardware stores, and scrap piles. If you find one, guard it carefully.

Q: Is the blade reforging loop a bug?

TIS confirmed it’s intended behavior (forum 94775). Blade-forging recipes accept their own output as input so you can reforge worn blades. The XP loop is a side effect they consider acceptable — it’s the “active contribution” approach vs. Build 41’s dismantle grind.

Q: What if my blade breaks during reforging?

Blade condition degrades slightly each reforge. After ~20 reforges, it’ll break. But by then you’ve gained thousands of XP and saved way more resources than a fresh blade costs. Just start with a new one.

Q: Do I need Blacksmithing magazine/VHS to unlock all recipes?

Most blade recipes are available from the skill level threshold. But some advanced recipes (Coat of Plates, Metal Codpiece) require either a magazine or Blacksmith occupation. If you picked Electrician or Carpenter, you’ll need to find Blacksmith’s Magazine in a tool shop.

Step-by-step

  1. Gather the tools

Find a hammer, tongs/pliers, and a pickaxe in garages or hardware stores. Every forge action requires a hammer in hand, and tongs are needed to hold hot metal.

  2. Build a primitive furnace and forge

Place a Stone Furnace and Stone Forge (built from stones and clay). Workstations cannot be picked back up after placement, so clear a 5x5 area with access to clay, trees, and rock before you commit.

  3. Produce charcoal

Build a Burning Pile from logs, light it, and let it burn down over several in-game hours. Harvest charcoal from the ash — this is the fuel for every forge action.

  4. Smelt scrap into iron

Dismantle scrap metal into chunks, smelt them into iron ingots at the furnace, then cast iron bars. Iron bars are the standard building block for everything you forge next.

  5. Forge and reforge blades for XP

Forge a knife blade, then re-enter the forge with the output blade as the input to reforge it again. This loop (TIS-confirmed intended behavior) repeats for repeated XP at a small charcoal cost per iteration.
