Kitchen Knife in Build 42 — Why 0.3–0.7 Damage Is a Last Resort

Build 42 kitchen knife: 0.3–0.7 damage, weight 0.7, condition 10, knockback 0.01. Nearly free to carry, nearly useless to swing — dead tier in the tier list.

FAQ

Is the kitchen knife worth carrying as a backup weapon?
Not as a weapon. At 0.3–0.7 damage it needs multiple swings per zombie with 0.01 knockback to interrupt nothing, and condition 10 does not stretch far. Its one real virtue is weight 0.7 — lighter than any blunt or blade weapon on our item pages.
Why do short blades feel worse than the numbers suggest?
Because flat penalties come off a tiny base. The weapon tier list's formula subtracts 0.1 damage per panic and stress level above 1: at Panic 3 plus Stress 2 that is minus 0.5, and a knife rolling its 0.3 floor lands at zero. Big-damage weapons eat the same penalty and barely notice.
Does the sharpness flag help?
PZwiki's infobox lists sharpness 1, which classifies it as a sharp weapon in the game data. That is the full extent of what we can source — neither source documents a mechanical bonus we could put a number on.

The Trade in One Line

The kitchen knife trades everything for 0.7 weight. The weapon tier list rates it dead tier on the same numbers printed here: 0.3–0.7 damage, 0.01 knockback, 0.9 maximum reach. If you are choosing a weapon with open inventory, this page exists to stop you from choosing this one.

What the Numbers Mean in Play Cross-Verified

  • Damage 0.3 – 0.7. The lowest range of any weapon on our item pages. The baseball bat’s floor (0.8) is above the knife’s ceiling.
  • Weight 0.7. Its one genuine claim: the lightest weapon we list, under half the bat’s 2 and a quarter of the fire axe’s 3.
  • Knockback 0.01. Rounding-error territory — shared with the whole cutlery family in the two-source table. Nothing about a knife hit moves a zombie. Contrast the bat and crowbar at 0.5, the sledgehammer at 1.0.
  • Reach 0.61 – 0.9. Shortest on this set of pages; the katana reaches 1.4. You are inside the zombie’s own range with nothing to show for it.
  • Condition 10. Middling — the machete has 13, the bat 15 — but spent on a weapon that needs two to four swings per kill. Maintenance drain is covered in the skill leveling guide.
  • Crit 25%. Above the sledgehammer’s 20% on paper; a crit on a 0.3–0.7 base is still a small number.
  • Door damage 1. PZwiki infobox. The knife is not a door tool by any reading.
  • Sharpness 1. Also PZwiki infobox: the game data classifies it as a sharp weapon. We stop there.

When Not to Use It

  • When you chose to be here. If inventory is open, take the bat: double the weight (2) for 0.8–1.1 damage, 0.5 knockback and a 40% crit. The knife only wins a fight with numbers it does not have.
  • The moment panic is high. The tier list’s worked example is the knife’s own worst case — Panic 3 + Stress 2 = −0.5 flat, floor roll 0.3, clamped to 0.0 damage. Read mood and panic for why small numbers get hurt worst.
  • Past one or two fights. Ten condition bought at 0.3–0.7 per swing is the poorest durability-per-kill on these pages.

How It Compares

Weapon Damage Weight Condition Knockback Crit
Kitchen Knife 0.3 – 0.7 0.7 10 0.01 25%
Baseball Bat 0.8 – 1.1 2 15 0.5 40%
Crowbar 0.6 – 1.15 2 15 0.5 20%
Machete 2 – 3 2 13 0.3 20%

The knife’s slot cost is 1.3 weight less than the bat. Read that row again before deciding: the tier list’s answer — “Both sources agree” on these values, dead tier anyway — is that nothing worth fighting with lives in that gap. The honest use of a kitchen knife is not as a weapon.

Sources & Verification

Every figure on this page is agreed by two independent sources we can read today, matched by the in-game item ID Base.KitchenKnife:

Source Type Notes
PZwiki — Kitchen Knife Semi-official wiki (declared an official site of The Indie Stone, volunteer-maintained) Infobox fields read via its MediaWiki API; door damage (1) and sharpness (1) are PZwiki infobox alone
pzfans — Weapon item tables Community data, stamped “Verified for Build 42.20.4” Independent rendering of the same fields

What this is not. Neither source is our own measurement, and PZwiki stamps most item pages against an older 42.10-era build while flagging that they may lag the current release. Treat these as 42.20-era agreement rather than 42.21-verified, and expect a patch note to change them eventually. Spawn locations are deliberately absent from this page: we could not source them twice, so we do not print them.
