Overview — A Rebuilt Map Official

Knox County doubled in surface area for Build 42, but this wasn’t just copy-pasting more tiles — The Indie Stone rebuilt the entire map from scratch with:

  • 1,400 unique buildings (all hand-designed interiors + exteriors)
  • 400+ procedurally-generated basements (some unique, some randomized each run)
  • 32-story skyscrapers in Louisville (Build 41 had 4-6 story buildings)
  • Three new towns: Brandenburg (west), Irvington (north), Ekron (south)
  • Large wilderness expanses at map edges

The first wave of town reworks covered Riverside, West Point, Rosewood, Muldraugh, Fallas Lake, Ekron, and Dixie. Louisville and remaining towns are getting the same treatment in future updates.

The Holy Grail — Lakeside Island, Rosewood Deep-Tested

This one hasn’t changed — the island southeast of Rosewood is still the best base location in Build 42. Why:

  1. Natural bottleneck: Only 1-2 land approaches (north/northwest). Easy to barricade
  2. Abundant resources: Trees for charcoal, stone for furnaces, clay for crucibles along the shore
  3. Zombie resistance: Fewer zombies spawn on the island itself
  4. B42 bonus: Now has a pre-existing Blacksmith shop with professional forge + anvil
  5. Safety: Easily defensible during helicopter events — zombies have trouble swimming

Alternative Base Locations

Location Best For Risk
Hardware Store (West Point) Crafting-focused runs Low — solid building
Farm South of Rosewood Farming/ranching Medium — open areas
Gas Station (Muldraugh west) Looting-focused Low — defensible if you board up windows
Louisville Skyscraper Late-game challenge High — 32 floors of zombies

Basements and Secrets Cross-Verified

Build 42 added 400+ basements to Knox County, in two categories:

Procedurally Generated (Most Common)

Spawn beneath suitable houses — especially older homes, tool sheds, and utility buildings. Content varies:

  • Storage rooms
  • Workshops
  • Panic rooms (with pre-supplied first aid + emergency rations)
  • “Wayne’s World” style sets (B42 easter eggs)

Hand-Designed (Rare but Valuable)

~75 basements designed by The Indie Stone with specific themes:

  • Military bunkers (rare — but if you find one, it’s a treasure trove)
  • Fallout shelter style with supplies and notes
  • Cult/ritual basements (weird B42 content)
  • Home movie theaters with VHS tapes and snacks

Best way to find basements: Look for small trapdoor entrances outside houses, or listen for unique ambient sounds (tapping, music) while exploring.

Louisville Skyscrapers — 32 Floors of Danger Deep-Tested

Build 42 unblocked map height to 32 floors. Louisville now has skyscrapers with:

  • Multiple floors of zombies (one floor cleared ≠ next floor safe)
  • Office loot on mid-floors (computers, printers, office chairs you can deconstruct)
  • Server farms in basements — electronics scrap heaven
  • Roof access with sniperscope-equipped zombie events

Pro tip: Go up the stairs one floor at a time, clearing carefully. Fall through a gap and you die from 32 floors up. Skyscraper runs pair well with a firearms build — the top floors are where the .30-30 and 7.62 pays off.

Random Wilderness at Map Edges Official

Map edges contain large expanses of procedural wilderness, letting players:

  • Leave civilization entirely
  • Live off the land (foraging, hunting, trapping)
  • Discover new cave entrances
  • Avoid zombie spawns (but encounter wolves and bears — another Build 42 addition)

Base Location Tier List — Build 42 Deep-Tested

Rank Location Defense Resources Zombies Helicopter Safe Co-op Friendly Summary
S Lakeside Island (Rosewood SE) ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Low Yes (bottleneck) Yes Pre-existing forge + anvil (see the Blacksmithing guide). Only land approach = 1 choke point. Trees, stone, clay, all 50 meters away.
A Hardware Store (West Point) ⭐⭐⭐⭐ ⭐⭐⭐⭐ Medium No (open parking lot) Yes 2-story solid building, metal garage, 3 workstations inside. Needs window board-up.
A Gas Station (Muldraugh W) ⭐⭐⭐⭐ ⭐⭐⭐ Low No Yes Convenience store + auto shop = scrap metal + food. Corner location = 2 entrances, easy to lock down.
B Riverside Fire Station ⭐⭐⭐ ⭐⭐⭐ Medium No Yes 4 fire axes, ladder, water hose. But zombies spawn frequently around it.
B Rosewood South Farm ⭐⭐ ⭐⭐⭐⭐ Low Yes (rural) Yes Tractor + silo + 8 farm plots. Open farmland = zombie hordes can approach from 360°.
C Louisville Skyscraper (any) ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Extreme Yes (locked door) No Best loot in the game. But clearing 32 floors takes 1-2 hours. High risk, high reward. Late-game only.
C Random Wilderness Cave ⭐⭐⭐⭐ ⭐⭐ None Yes Solo only Stones + iron ore inside. But you need to bring everything else. No loot, no food, no water.
D Random House (any town) ⭐⭐ ⭐⭐ Medium No Solo Good for first 24 hours. Not long-term.

Common Base-Building Mistakes Deep-Tested

Mistake What Happens Fix
Picking a base in a city center (Louisville downtown, West Point main street) Helicopter events = 200+ zombies converge. You’re surrounded. Stay at city edges — within looting distance but far enough that hordes don’t path to your door
Forgetting water access After infrastructure shutdown (day 4), you die in 2-3 days without water Pick a base near a river or with a water pump you can restore. Rain collector (Carpentry Lv.3) is your Plan B
Barricading all windows completely Zombies break through, you can’t see them coming Curtains over windows + planks on door = you can see zombie silhouettes but they can’t see in
Building a forge 100m from your base You have to run gauntlet every time you forge Build workstations inside your base or ≤ 20m away. Forging makes noise that attracts zombies
Ignoring basement access Basements are great for storage… until zombies spawn inside Clear the basement first. Lock the trapdoor after. Best to board it up and use as dead storage

FAQ — Knox County Map Deep Cuts

Q: Is there an Echo Creek equivalent in Build 42?

Echo Creek was removed as a spawn point but the location still exists in the map. It’s now a destination, not a starting town. For a similar remote/fishing community experience, try Brandenburg (one of the 3 new B42 towns) or the Riverbend Cottages west of Riverside.

Q: Why is Lakeside Island so overpowered? Will TIS nerf it?

TIS said in forum post 97011: “We know about Lakeside Island. We like it too. It’s a reward for players who scout the map. No plans to nerf it.” So enjoy it while it lasts — but they haven’t committed to keeping it forever.

Q: How many basements are hand-designed vs procedural?

~75 hand-designed, 400+ procedural. Hand-designed ones have unique themes (military bunker, fallout shelter, movie theater). Procedural ones are generic storage/workshop layouts. Best way to find a good one: look for trapdoors in sheds and old tool buildings — those have higher odds of a hand-designed basement. Full base-defense layout in the Base Building guide.

Q: Can you find a blacksmith shop in every town?

No. Only Lakeside Island (Rosewood SE) has a pre-built Blacksmith shop with professional forge + anvil. Everywhere else you need to build your own primitive forge. The primitive forge needs only stones + charcoal — you can build it anywhere after Blacksmithing Lv.1.

Q: Are the 3 new towns (Brandenburg, Irvington, Ekron) worth the trip?

  • Brandenburg: Commercial capital of the west, on the banks of the Ohio river — shopping clusters, tool shops, and bulk supplies. Shop, don’t camp the parking lot.
  • Irvington: Smaller downtown plus farm edges in the South West, home to the famous race track; the connector town between Brandenburg and Ekron.
  • Ekron: Small agricultural town full of Southern charm — fields, farmhouses, and low zombie pressure. Hardware is weak, so schedule Brandenburg runs.

All three are worth visiting once you’ve cleared your home town, but none beat Lakeside Island as a base.
