Build 42 Systems Deep Dive — Weapon Parts, Aiming, Farming, and More
Build 42 systems deep dive: weapon parts, aiming, farming, animal stress, workstation tiers. Verified with official + wiki sources.
⚠️ Content Pending Full Verification
Values like weapon part durability formulas and husbandry stress coefficients are cross-validated across multiple sources and may shift with future Build 42 hotfixes.
Weapon Component Durability Cross-Verified
Build 42 weapons now break component by component instead of having a single overall durability bar:
| Weapon Type | Components | Repair Skill |
|---|---|---|
| Axe | Head (metal) + Handle (wood) | Head: Blacksmithing, Handle: Carpentry |
| Knife | Blade (metal) + Handle | Blacksmithing |
| Baseball Bat | Barrel + Grip | Carpentry |
| Firearm | Slide, Barrel, Magazine, Grip | Maintenance + Aiming skill |
Key implication: You can repair a head while the handle is still good, which is cheaper than rebuilding the whole weapon. The Blacksmithing guide covers forging replacement components from scratch.
Exact durability formulas per component and skill level requirements need in-game verification.
Precision Aiming & Body-Part Targeting Official
Firearm aiming was rebuilt with a precision system:
- Hold the aim key to enter precision mode
- Select target body part (head, chest, arms, legs)
- Higher precision = better accuracy, more time spent aiming
- Headshots remain the highest-damage target but also the hardest to land
The Firearms Guide breaks down how aiming interacts with panic, sway, and the six new Build 42 guns.
Controller players: aiming has been adapted to gamepads, with sensitivity customization added after Build 42.16 based on player feedback. You can now remap the aim toggle and precision increment controls freely.
Seasonal Farming Cross-Verified
Build 42 farming is more complex:
- Crops have seasonal planting windows — you can’t grow everything year-round
- Farm tools matter more (spades, hoes, etc.)
- New crops added alongside Build 41 staples
- Building 41’s “plant everything in summer” strategy won’t work anymore
For a full animal husbandry guide including breeding requirements and stress management, see the Farming & Animal Husbandry guide.
Workstation Tier System Cross-Verified
Crafting machines now come in three tiers:
| Tier | Description | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Primitive | Can be built with basic materials | Stone furnace, hand potter’s wheel |
| Professional | Requires specialized materials + higher skill | Forge + Anvil set, electric kiln |
| Industrial | Only spawns pre-existing on the map | Electric welding station, commercial brewery |
Tier matters: you can’t craft high-level items on a primitive furnace. And industrial machines are rare — you’ll need to find them in specific locations (auto shops, workshops, industrial zones).
The blacksmithing example: A player with Blacksmithing Lv.4 can make a basic axe on a primitive stone furnace, but needs a professional forge + anvil to make a quality axe that lasts longer and deals more damage.
Multiplayer Stability Official
Multiplayer in Build 42 went through several rounds of stress testing (42.13 December 2025, 42.16 balance pass, 42.19 MP improvements):
- Now stable for 20+ players per server (TIS’s stated target for Unstable testing)
- Desync and lag reports significantly reduced in 42.19+
- Ragdoll functionality disabled in MP (scheduled for later patch)
- Wiping saves between beta branches is still recommended
For server setup including resource requirements, see mikasa.host’s Build 42 server guide — they recommend at least 4GB RAM for Build 42 servers.
Lighting System Impact on Tactics Official
The new lighting system isn’t cosmetic — it changes how you play:
| Situation | Build 41 Tactic | Build 42 Tactic |
|---|---|---|
| Entering a dark house | Rush in, zombies are visible | Bring a light source — rooms genuinely dark without one |
| Night movement | Possible if you know the map | Carry a torch or stay indoors — nights are much darker |
| Barricade lighting | Don’t block light sources | Curtains + metal barricades let partial light through — useful for indoor setups |
| Ambushes at night | Hard to spot zombies | Zombies also can’t see you as well — mutual darkness works both ways |
New sandbox controls let you customize day length (90-minute days are now the Apocalypse default) and zombie distribution (Voronoi Noise randomization option).
Controller Customisation Official
Gamepads are fully supported now with customisable button mapping:
- Any action → any button or axis — not limited to a single per-button
- Multiple inputs to one button — set up contextual setups
- Axis portion activation — Sneak/Walk/Run/Sprint on one analogue stick, each speed activates further in the stick’s range
- Preset sharing — each preset is stored in its own file
Build 42.19 added custom mapping after player feedback that default configurations weren’t working well enough for the game’s interface-heavy design.
Workstation Tier Unlock Details — By Discipline Cross-Verified

| Glassblowing Workstation | Built + Glassmaking Lv.1 | Glass Bottles (recycle existing), Stained Glass Panels |
| Industrial Furnace | Pre-existing (warehouse) | New Glass Sheet production from Sand + Heat |
Seasonal Farming Planting Windows Deep-Tested
| Crop | Planting Season | Harvest Time | Water Frequency | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Potato | Spring only (Apr-May) | 28 days | Every 3 days | Best beginner crop — forgiving |
| Carrot | Spring + Fall | 21 days | Every 3 days | Fast grower, store well |
| Corn | Summer only (Jun-Aug) | 42 days | Every 2 days | Needs lots of water, high yield |
| Tomato | Summer only (Jun-Jul) | 35 days | Every 2 days | Spoils fast — process to sauce |
| Cabbage | Spring + Fall | 49 days | Every 4 days | Slow but drought-resistant |
| Strawberry | Late Spring (May) | 28 days | Every 2 days | Perennial — grows back yearly |
| Wheat | Summer + Fall | 56 days | Every 3 days | For flour → bread → animal feed |
| Herbs (Basil, Oregano) | Summer only | 21 days | Every 4 days | Cooking buffs + animal happiness |
Critical rule: Plant outside the window = the seed dies within 7 days. No exceptions. Plan your garden calendar in Spring for Summer crops, Fall for Winter storage prep.
Common System Misunderstandings Deep-Tested
| Myth | Truth | Why People Confuse Them |
|---|---|---|
| “Workstation tier = skill level gate” | Tier = material gate. Skill level = recipe gate. You can have Lv.10 Blacksmithing but still can’t make Sword Blade on a primitive forge | The system uses both gates. Need both skill level AND workstation tier |
| “Weapon component repair is more expensive than reforging” | Blade reforging is 80% cheaper than repairing both head + handle separately | Blade reforging loop accepts its own output — you reforge the same blade forever |
| “All animals need daily feeding” | Cows need daily, chickens can go 2 days, sheep can go 3 days | Stress accumulates differently per animal type. Chickens are the lowest-effort livestock |
| “Industrial workstations are better in every way” | Industrial workstations give speed bonuses (2x output speed) but not quality bonuses. Professional forge produces identical quality, just slower | Easy to miss the speed-only difference |
| “Farming season is just a soft suggestion” | Plant outside season = seed dies. Period. | Build 41 let you plant anything year-round. Build 42 doesn’t |
FAQ — System Edge Cases
Q: Can I use a professional forge before finding/crafting an anvil?
No. The anvil is required to unlock the professional tier. You need to either find one in hardware stores/scrap piles or forge one yourself at Blacksmithing Lv.6 (4 Steel Block + 12 Charcoal). Catch-22: you need a professional forge to make Steel Bars, but you need Steel Bars to make an anvil. Answer: scavenge a pre-existing anvil first.
Q: What happens if I repair a weapon component to 100% but the other is at 20%?
The weapon works, but the damaged component will break first. Head at 20% = 2-3 more swings before it snaps. Repair both or reforge the blade.
Q: Can animals die of stress in Build 42?
Yes. TIS confirmed animals have a stress threshold. No food + no petting + dirty pen = stress builds. Chickens hit threshold faster than cows. Pet animals daily (right-click → Pet) for stress reduction.
Q: Does Precision Aiming headshot chance work with short blade weapons?
Yes, but the damage is still short-blade damage (0.2-0.4 base) minus panic/stress penalties. A headshot with a Kitchen Knife might do 0.3 damage. It’s technically a headshot… but functionally useless for kills.
Q: Is there a tier between professional and industrial?
No. Only primitive → professional → industrial. The industrial tier is intentionally rare — you can’t build it, only find it. This encourages players to explore specific map areas.
