Overview — Welding Is the Metal-Sheet Skill Official

In Build 42, Welding is the skill that turns scrap metal into metal sheets and handles metal repairs. It is powered by a single tool — the welding torch — and it is one of the six new craft disciplines that make up Build 42’s overhauled crafting economy.

Where Blacksmithing gives you weapons and armor, Welding gives you building material: metal sheets are among the strongest barricade and wall materials in the game, so a leveled Welding skill doubles as base production. That makes it valuable for any run that wants a hardened base, even if you are not chasing metal weapons.

What You Need to Start

Welding has a low setup bar — one tool and a supply of scrap:

Requirement Where to find it Notes
Welding torch Garages, auto shops, hardware stores The tool in hand for every welding action — you cannot level without one
Scrap metal / car wrecks Roadsides, lots, any wrecked vehicle The XP source for levels 1–2
Steel bars Smelted via Blacksmithing, or looted Mid-level work (cutting bars, knives)

The XP Ladder — What Actually Levels Welding Deep-Tested

The practical XP route, broken by level range:

Levels Action Rate
1–2 Dismantle car wrecks ~17 XP per 10 torch uses
3–4 Make scrap-metal large knives 20 XP per 4 torch uses
2–4 (alt) Cut steel bars (reforgeable at a simple forge) 10 XP per torch use
5–10 Make metal sheets / cut small sheets 25 XP per 2 torch uses

The key Build 42 change: the Build 41 habit of dismantling random furniture for XP no longer works — except car wrecks. Dismantle XP was nerfed to near-zero across the board, and car wrecks are the one remaining meaningful exception. So if you are grinding Welding, you are deliberately going to wrecks, not to a dresser in your living room.

Where Welding Pays Off

Metal sheets are the skill’s real reward, and they show up in two places:

Use Why it matters
Barricades Metal sheet barricades block all light and are among the hardest for zombies to break — the best stealth + defense combo.
Walls / floors Metal sheets and small sheets let you build harder base structures than wood or stone alone.
Repairs Welding is the skill for repairing metal gear, so a leveled character keeps tools and weapons usable longer.

Pair Welding with Masonry for a base that is both fast to build (stone) and hard to breach (metal).

How It Fits the Craft Chain Deep-Tested

Welding branches off the main Knapping → Pottery → Blacksmithing line rather than gating it. The chain that matters for most runs:

Knapping → stone chisel → Masonry (walls, furnace blocks)
Pottery → crucible → Blacksmithing (smelt metal, steel bars)
Welding → torch + scrap → metal sheets (barricades, walls, repairs)

You can push Welding independently — it mainly needs the torch and scrap — but if you want steel bars for the cutting/knife work, you are borrowing from the Blacksmithing side of the chain. The full dependency map is in the Crafting overview.

Universal Boosters Deep-Tested

Booster Effect Notes
Crafty trait 130% XP to all crafting skills Best single trait for a crafting run
Fast Learner trait 130% XP to all skills Also boosts combat/movement skills

FAQ — Welding Deep Questions

Q: Can I level Welding by dismantling furniture like in Build 41?

No. In Build 42, dismantling random furniture gives essentially no welding XP. The only efficient dismantle source is car wrecks (about 17 XP per 10 torch uses at levels 1–2).

Q: Do I need a permanent workstation to level Welding?

Not for the XP itself — you level by using the welding torch on metal. A simple forge is useful for the reforgeable steel-bar loop (cut bars, reforge for extra XP), but the skill does not require you to build and place a big station the way Blacksmithing does.

Q: Is Welding worth it for a non-crafting build?

If you want a hardened base, yes — metal sheets are a top-tier barricade and wall material. If you are purely a looter, the payoff is lower and Masonry gives you cheaper defense. Welding is best for runs that plan a long, fortified base.

Q: What is the fastest way to reach level 10?

Car wrecks for the early levels, knife and steel-bar work through the mid levels, then metal sheets for the top range (about 25 XP per 2 torch uses). Add Crafty or Fast Learner and a matching skill book to multiply every one of those events.

Step-by-step

  1. Get a welding torch

Welding only progresses when you use a welding torch, so find one in garages, auto shops, or hardware stores before you grind. The torch is the tool in hand for every welding action.

  2. Dismantle car wrecks for early XP

At levels 1-2 the cheapest XP is dismantling car wrecks, roughly 17 XP per 10 torch uses. Cars are dense and abundant, so this is the natural early loop. In Build 42 dismantling random furniture no longer gives welding XP, so use wrecks on purpose.

  3. Move to knife and steel-bar work

As the skill climbs, make scrap-metal large knives (about 20 XP per 4 torch uses) or cut steel bars (about 10 XP per torch use, reforgeable at a simple forge). These bridge the mid levels without needing new stations.

  4. Produce metal sheets for the base

From level 5 the payoff is metal sheets and cut small sheets, roughly 25 XP per 2 torch uses. Metal sheets are a high-value barricade and wall material, so this loop doubles as base production toward the end of the skill.
