Baseball Bat in Build 42 — Damage, Crit Rate, Condition and Verdict

Build 42 baseball bat stats: 0.8–1.1 damage, weight 2, condition 15, knockback 0.5, 40% crit. Durable and crit-heavy, but it never one-shots like a sledgehammer.

FAQ

Is the baseball bat better than the crowbar?
For pure fighting, the numbers favor the bat: identical weight (2), identical condition (15), identical knockback (0.5), and the bat crits at 40% against the crowbar's 20%. The crowbar hits marginally harder at the top end — 1.15 versus 1.1 — and does more door damage (8 against 5, per PZwiki's infobox).
Why does the tier list rate the bat so highly on 0.8–1.1 damage?
Because of knockback and durability, not damage. 0.5 knockback staggers a zombie between swings, and condition 15 means it outlasts every heavy hitter. The weapon tier list makes exactly this argument in its Short Blunt section.
Does a 40% crit make up for the low damage?
We can source the 40% frequency — the highest of the blunt group — but neither source we transcribed publishes the crit damage multiplier, so we cannot tell you what a crit actually adds. Judge the bat on what is confirmed: 0.8–1.1 per swing, 15 condition.

The Trade in One Line

The bat buys you consistency: it almost never misses on durability, its 40% crit rate is the best of any blunt weapon we can source, and at weight 2 it never taxes your inventory. What it cannot do is end a fight in one swing — 0.8–1.1 damage sits under the sledgehammer’s 2–3 and the machete’s 2–3.

What the Numbers Mean in Play Cross-Verified

  • Damage 0.8 – 1.1. Mid-pack. Enough that two clean swings finish most zombies, not enough that one does.
  • Crit 40%. The highest crit rate of the blunt weapons we list — the sledgehammer and the crowbar both sit at 20%. Across the full two-source table only the hunting knife (50%) and the shovel (40%) match or beat it.
  • Condition 15. The joint-best durability of the common blunt group, tied with the crowbar and above the sledgehammer’s 10. Condition loss is gated by the Maintenance skill — see the skill leveling guide.
  • Knockback 0.5. Same as the crowbar, half the sledgehammer’s 1.0. It staggers one zombie; it does not flatten a line.
  • Weight 2. Like the crowbar, machete and katana — a bat costs you nothing on a long trek, which is where the weight-6 sledgehammer loses.
  • Reach 0.61 – 1.25. A workable arc for a short weapon; the sledgehammer’s range starts higher (0.7) but the bat’s floor of 0.61 lets it swing in closer.
  • Door damage 5. PZwiki’s infobox number, and it is the worst of the blunt group: the crowbar does 8, the pickaxe does 35, the sledgehammer 40. If the plan involves a locked room, bring something else.

When Not to Use It

  • When you need one hit to count. The machete matches sledgehammer damage at the same weight 2; the bat does not. In a fair fight the bat just lasts longer.
  • Deep into panic. The weapon tier list damage formula subtracts 0.1 damage flat per panic level above 1 — a 0.8 floor erodes fast under stress. Read the mechanic in the mood and panic guide before trusting any low-damage weapon in a bad moment.
  • Against doors. 5 door damage is a non-answer. Take the crowbar at 8 or leave the breaching to the pickaxe.

How It Compares

Weapon Damage Weight Condition Knockback Crit
Baseball Bat 0.8 – 1.1 2 15 0.5 40%
Crowbar 0.6 – 1.15 2 15 0.5 20%
Sledgehammer 2 – 3 6 10 1.0 20%
Machete 2 – 3 2 13 0.3 20%

Read it as bat-versus-crowbar first: weight, condition and knockback identical, so the bat’s 40% crit against 20% is the whole argument, and the crowbar’s marginally higher top-end (1.15) plus its 8 door damage is the counter-argument. Against the heavy hitters, the bat never wins a single exchange — it wins the hour, because condition 15 outlasts the sledgehammer’s 10.

Sources & Verification

Every figure on this page is agreed by two independent sources we can read today, matched by the in-game item ID Base.BaseballBat:

Source Type Notes
PZwiki — Baseball Bat Semi-official wiki (declared an official site of The Indie Stone, volunteer-maintained) Infobox fields read via its MediaWiki API; door damage (5) is PZwiki infobox alone
pzfans — Weapon item tables Community data, stamped “Verified for Build 42.20.4” Independent rendering of the same fields

What this is not. Neither source is our own measurement, and PZwiki stamps most item pages against an older 42.10-era build while flagging that they may lag the current release. Treat these as 42.20-era agreement rather than 42.21-verified, and expect a patch note to change them eventually. Spawn locations are deliberately absent from this page: we could not source them twice, so we do not print them.
