How to Build a Forge in Project Zomboid — Build 42 Blacksmithing Progression

Build 42 forge progression: Primitive to Simple to Advanced Forge, the crucible-to-anvil prerequisite chain, charcoal fuel, and which material lists conflict.

FAQ

Do I need an anvil to build a forge in Build 42?
For the Simple and Advanced tiers, community guides list a blacksmith anvil in the build materials — and anvils themselves are cast in crucibles, which are potted, dried and kiln-fired. So the practical first step is Pottery, not Blacksmithing.
What fuel does a forge use in Build 42?
Charcoal, consumed in double digits per forging action by community measurement; charcoal comes from logs burned in a charcoal pile or a burned-out barrel kiln. Steel-grade recipes move to coke and limestone.

⚠️ Content Pending Full Verification

Workstation tiers and recipe inheritance come from the community wiki (page stamped 42.12.3 — older than current 42.20.4). Exact material counts conflict between two pages of the same field-tested guide; both lists are shown, neither is asserted.

The Forge Ladder Cross-Verified

Build 42’s blacksmithing workstations form a strict chain, each tier inheriting the tier below:

Tier Gating (community-reported) Notes
Primitive Forge No level requirement per build42guide Your first smelting point
Simple Forge Requires the book Modern Blacksmithing at Home The “real” forge tier
Advanced Forge Simple’s list + bellows Inherits all lower recipes
Grinder / Kiln side workstations Stone wheel line; crucible firing

Iron flow runs ExtractIronFromBloom → ForgeBar → blades — you start from bloom/sponge iron, not ore-in-one-step.

The Anvil Gate (Why Pottery Comes First) Cross-Verified

Three independent guides agree on the prerequisite chain: mix clay and sand into crucibles (two large or four small), fire them in a kiln, melt iron, and cast the anvil — then the forge’s build list stops being theoretical. The masonry side (stone anvil needs Masonry 2, stone blocks feed the build) is the other pre-forgeskill tax. This chain is consistent across all three sources, which is why we print it despite the material-table conflict below.

The Material-List Conflict Deep-Tested

The same guide site publishes two build lists:

Source page Primitive Simple
build42guide blacksmithing page 10 stones + 1 stone anvil + 1 concrete 30 stone blocks + blacksmith anvil + large pot + log + concrete (+ bellows for Advanced)
build42guide recipes page furnace-style chain: 6 clay lumps + 4 stones + concrete bucket 40 stone blocks + cement, forge = furnace + anvil combo

For the skill XP math that drives this line, the skill XP table lists steel-plate (45 XP, level 4) and the charcoal fuel economy; the full tool list and reforging loop live in the blacksmithing guide, and the knapping and masonry pages cover the stone-age side of the chain.
