Build 42 Basements & Bunkers — Underground Loot, Risk, and Retreat

Build 42 added procedural basements, unique cellars and Cold War bunkers: better loot behind worse odds, one staircase out, and no dark room without a light.

FAQ

Do all houses have basements in Build 42?
No. Both guides describe a mix of procedural basements under eligible residential and commercial footprints plus hand-placed unique cellars attached to landmark buildings, and the official feature list says a sandbox option governs how often they appear.
How many basements are there in Build 42?
The written sources do not agree, and this page does not pick a number: one guide reports roughly 130 random basement variants, another reports about 400 procedural basements plus some 75 unique layouts tied to specific buildings. Treat any count as a rough scale indicator, not a fact.
What is the safest way to clear a basement?
Take two independent light sources, clear the staircase first so the exit stays yours, then work room by room outward. Both guides are blunt that vertical fights in a stairwell are how basement runs end — retreat on bad odds instead.
Are bunkers worth the trip in Build 42?
They are safe-room material rather than loot pins: one guide reports the Cold War facility carries thin loot apart from leftover military gear, and panic rooms exist with undocumented contents. The confirmed value is defense, not supplies.

What Build 42 Opened Underground Cross-Verified

Build 41 had cellars you occasionally forgot about. Build 42 lifted the height limits and made the floor below a real system: procedural basements generated under eligible buildings, hand-placed unique basements attached to landmarks, and a small set of named Cold War-era sites below the map. Both guides also agree the frequency is sandbox-governed — the same option system that decides hordes decides how often a house has a floor underneath it, and one guide adds that world seeds fix basement placement, which is why seed talk circulates.

The scale is where the sources part company, so we publish the disagreement instead of a number:

Not every house — enough that checking stairs becomes standard loot discipline both Agreed

Why Underground Loot Is a Risk Trade Deep-Tested

The two write-ups describe the same trade in the same terms, which is why this section is published as agreed rather than hedged:

Factor What it means below ground
Better loot density Cellar loot skews toward storage, tools and cold storage; unique basements carry stronger spikes and layout puzzles
One exit The staircase is the door. A bad fight underground has no second way out
Dark, tight sightlines Build 42’s lighting pass makes unlit rooms useless to read; underground there is no ambient bounce at all
Sound funnels Basements carry and concentrate noise — one screamer at the bottom of the stairs blocks your only route
Enclosed cleanup Corpses rot in the air of the room you live in, so an uncleared cellar becomes a health problem, not just a hazard

Named Sites — One Guide’s Report, Not Our Fact Deep-Tested

Community guides name specific underground destinations. We list them because they are useful search targets, and we label them as one guide’s report (which itself cites the community wiki) because we cannot corroborate them with a second independent written source yet:

  • The Cold War facility near March Ridge — reported as a decommissioned 1991 bunker with an entrance tunnel, decontamination room, power room, armory and dormitories, and thin loot beyond leftover military gear.
  • A secret bunker in Doe Valley — reported as a confirmed location and a guaranteed generator spawn; contents undocumented.
  • Fixed basements that spawn every world — community favourites include a police department cellar and a general-store basement under a gas station.
  • Panic rooms — listed among 42.20 features in suitable larger houses, with loot nobody has documented; treat one you find as a bonus safe room.
  • Explosives underground (42.21) — one guide reports that pipe bombs and aerosol bombs now detonate properly below ground, which is as dangerous to the thrower as to the swarm in tight geometry.

Confirm these in your own save before betting a character on them. The county-wide picture, including which town pages are verified, is in the Knox County map hub.

Agreed and published: the underground system exists, its loot/risk trade, the stairs and lighting discipline. Disclosed as disagreement: total counts. Published as single-source leads: named bunkers, fixed basements, panic rooms, and 42.21 explosive behaviour.
