FAQ

What should I do first in Build 42?
Silence the spawn house — every TV or radio you can hear is free aggro — then close ground-floor curtains, take a real weapon, and fill every container with water while the taps still work. Do that before any loot run.
How early can water and power shut off?
Both are sandbox-rolled windows rather than a fixed day, and the list includes a 0–30 day band, so a fresh Apocalypse save can lose water inside the first month or sooner. Treat day one as the deadline and stock water immediately.
Which skills should I level in the first week?
Reading a tier-1 skill book gives a 3× multiplier toward levels 1–2 and is the cheapest early level in the game, and watching TV while power lasts adds free XP. Carpentry and Cooking are the usual week-one picks.
Should I leave my spawn house?
Only if it is noisy or single-storey on a busy street — otherwise a quiet multi-storey house is a fine first base. Stash loot upstairs, keep ground-floor lights off at night, and pick a fence line before you commit to barricades.

What Is the Day-One Plan? Cross-Verified

All three week-one write-ups open on the same four moves in the same order: silence the house, arm yourself, bank water, then loot with a plan. Nothing else matters until those are done, because every one of them is cheap now and expensive later.

What Do Hours 24–72 Look Like? Deep-Tested

Once the house is quiet and you have a weapon, the early game is about converting time into permanent advantages: XP while power still runs, tools before the good houses are picked over, and a defensible room.

What Should Be Finished by Day Seven? Cross-Verified

Week one ends with infrastructure, not loot: a power plan, one preservation lane, a first crop inside its window, and a base decision you do not have to revisit.

What Actually Kills New Players in Week One? Deep-Tested

Failure Why it ends the run Fix
Noise you did not switch off A TV or radio pulls zombies from further than new players expect Kill every device you can hear, then move crouched
Fair fights Two or more zombies at once beats an untrained character Only take lone targets; back out through a second exit
No water banked The shutoff window can open inside the first month Fill containers on day one — see water collection
Untreated wounds Scratches and lacerations carry real bacterial risk Clean, dress, and re-dress — the ladder is in the infection guide
No power plan Fridges, freezers and pumps all die with the grid Plan the generator before you need cold storage
Planting off-calendar Out-of-window crops fail outright Check the crop calendar before you sow
