The Trade in One Line
The machete is the weapon tier list’s argument that damage and weight matter more than knockback — 2–3 damage in a weight-2 package that lasts longer than the sledgehammer. It loses exactly one thing: 0.3 knockback means nothing on the receiving end hits the floor, so a crowd stays standing while you work through it one swing at a time.
What the Numbers Mean in Play Cross-Verified
- Damage 2 – 3. The top of the two-source table alongside the sledgehammer — a clean swing ends most fights, which is the entire point.
- Weight 2. A third of the sledgehammer’s 6. This is a weapon you carry all day without parking it in a vehicle.
- Condition 13. Above the sledgehammer’s 10, below the baseball bat and crowbar at 15. Durability drain is gated by Maintenance — see the skill leveling guide.
- Knockback 0.3. The blunt group’s worst would be 0.01 (kitchen knives), but among real weapons 0.3 is the floor: the bat and crowbar stagger at 0.5, the sledgehammer flattens at 1.0. Plan on one zombie at a time.
- Reach 0.61 – 1.23. The swing starts closer than the sledgehammer’s 0.7 floor, though its maximum stops short of the sledgehammer’s 1.35.
- Crit 20%. Nothing special — same as the sledgehammer and crowbar; the bat doubles it at 40%.
- Door damage 10, sharpness 1. Both from PZwiki’s infobox. The 10 is exceeded on our item pages only by the pickaxe at 35 and the sledgehammer at 40; the sharpness flag classifies it as a sharp weapon in the game data.
When Not to Use It
- When you get surrounded. 0.3 knockback is the honest weakness — the sledgehammer converts a pile-up into turn-based combat and the machete cannot. If your plan involves being in the open with multiple zombies, that is the sledgehammer’s job.
- When one more swing will do. The bat’s 15 condition and 40% crit outlast and out-crit it; grab the bat for a long trek you expect to fight through repeatedly.
- As an emergency kitchen pick. The kitchen knife shares the blade family but does 0.3–0.7 — the machete is not its smaller cousin, they are different classes of weapon.
How It Compares
| Weapon | Damage | Weight | Condition | Knockback | Crit |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Machete | 2 – 3 | 2 | 13 | 0.3 | 20% |
| Sledgehammer | 2 – 3 | 6 | 10 | 1.0 | 20% |
| Baseball Bat | 0.8 – 1.1 | 2 | 15 | 0.5 | 40% |
| Katana | 8 – 8 | 2 | 10 | 0.5 | 35% |
The top two rows are the real decision: identical damage, and then the machete wins on weight, condition and reach while the sledgehammer wins on knockback alone. The katana prints a monstrous 8–8 but the common pool ends here — for anything you expect to actually hold, machete versus sledgehammer is the fight.
Sources & Verification
Every figure on this page is agreed by two independent sources we can read today, matched by the in-game item ID Base.Machete:
| Source | Type | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| PZwiki — Machete | Semi-official wiki (declared an official site of The Indie Stone, volunteer-maintained) | Infobox fields read via its MediaWiki API; door damage (10) and sharpness (1) are PZwiki infobox alone |
| pzfans — Weapon item tables | Community data, stamped “Verified for Build 42.20.4” | Independent rendering of the same fields |
What this is not. Neither source is our own measurement, and PZwiki stamps most item pages against an older 42.10-era build while flagging that they may lag the current release. Treat these as 42.20-era agreement rather than 42.21-verified, and expect a patch note to change them eventually. Spawn locations are deliberately absent from this page: we could not source them twice, so we do not print them.
